Four Steps to Take After a Car Accident

I have treated hundreds of patients with whiplash or other injury from car accidents over my 27 years as a chiropractor. After an accident, people are often overwhelmed and not sure where to begin when it comes to treatment and recovery.  Here are my four key steps to take if you are in a car accident:

  • Even if you have minor symptoms, or none at all. Symptoms often don’t show up right away and can manifest themselves even months later.
  • By an experienced provider who performs detailed, hands on, examinations of the muscles and bones of the spine and extremities.
  • To document the findings, even if you’re not ready to begin treatment right away.
  • To diagnose any structural damage that is only seen on an X-Ray.

2. Use a Multi-Specialty Approach

  • It is difficult for one provider to be proficient in all of the necessary services.
  • Chiropractic for misalignments of bones and pinched nerves.
  • Physical therapy for rehab of injured muscles.
  • Massage therapy for muscle soreness and spasm.
  • Medical providers for internal injuries and short term medication use if severe pain.

3. Keep Moving

  • Joints get nutrition through movement. A reduction in movement leads to faster degeneration.
  • Muscles stiffen and weaken if not moved frequently.
  • Helps to disperse swelling.
  • Reduces the intensity of pain.

4. Maintain Your Lifestyle When Possible

  • To stay productive.
  • To expect a full recovery.
  • Takes your mind off your injury.
  • Reduces risk of depression and anxiety.

By following these four key steps, most of our patients have a full recovery of their whiplash and car accident related injuries. Ready for some inspiration? Watch Liz’s recovery story here!
